As the school starts, clubs are beginning to develop. WISTEM is one of the many clubs Rocktown offers, which is a club supporting women in STEM fields. Senior Nighat Sumbal is the treasurer of the WSTEM club.
“I decided to join because a lot of my friends were doing it, and it just seemed cool to me as a freshman,” Sumbal said. I was in the STEM academy. So this was something at that time that was offered to girls in STEM. So, I thought it was a really cool opportunity.” Sumbal said
The club hosts monthly meetings as well as events involving the whole school.
“ I really enjoy the spring social, planning for that, coming out of class a little bit early, and prepping all the food, the questions for the panelists, and the activity that we end up doing with the whole group.” Sumbal said
The club is meant to encourage girls to get involved in STEM fields that are dominated by men. It’s also a club where you can relax and have fun.
“ It is a very inclusive club. It’s just really high energy, and everybody always has a really good time. We have snacks, and we do monthly meetings about various topics that people want to discuss, and now it’s open to all girls.” Sumbal said
This club has been going on for its second year at Rocktown and will continue to grow.
Another student involved in WiSTEM is Senior Maryam Hussein. Maryam Hussein is the vice president of Wistem.
“I decided to join Wistem because I was already involved in the STEM Academy. I decided to join in my freshman year because it looked really cool.” Hussein said
I just liked all of the activities that the girls were doing, and I wanted to be a part of that.” Hussein said
Hussein believes that girls should really take this club, and that it’s an important part of gaining confidence.
“ I think it’s important because it really increases confidence and just kind of the idea of just being your own self and being in a comfortable environment where you’re not only supported by just your friends, you’re also supported by peers in that club,” Hussein said
