Students from Black Student Union share what it’s like to be a part of BSU and their thoughts on their recent field trip to Hampton University. Leader of BSU Mrs. Colleen Morris, Sophomores Camden Whitelow, and Jahkari Johnson explain what it is like to be a part of BSU and their experience on the field trip.
Mrs. Morris has been helping with BSU for about 6 years, she started at Harrisonburg High School with sponsors. Mrs. Morris enjoys the activities and the field trips that the students got to attend.
“I started BSU because I wanted the students to have a place they could go to, and join a club that can help them come with diverse students.” Morris said. “We felt like it would be a good opportunity for them to see a HBCU college and see where they will may end up.”
Camden Whitelow enjoys their social events and getting together.
“I joined BSU to get closer to my people and people who are just like me.” Whitelow said. “I felt like it was a great time to socialize and really find out great qualities about HBCU and college in general.”
Something that he found interesting was the library because he never saw a library that big.
“I enjoyed the field trip because it was a time to get out of class and enjoy my day. I feel like the college would be suitable for a lot of people but just not me.” Whitelow said.
Jahkari Johnson thought the field trip was fun because he got to spend it with his friends. Something that interests him about Hampton University is the little events on their field.
“I felt excited to go because I was waiting a whole week.” Johnson said.
In the future, going to Hampton University could be an option for any student.
